A breast augmentation is a procedure used to increase the size and improve the appearance of the breast. While there are different methods used in commonly performed cosmetic treatment, there are some things that you can consistently expect before, during, and after any type of breast augmentation surgery.
Before Breast Augmentation Surgery
Before any
breast augmentation and implant surgery, you will need to have a thorough consultation with a qualified cosmetic surgeon to determine what method of surgery is best for you. During this consultation you will have to decide what type of breast implant you desire, as well as the size of the breast you want.
You may have to have some blood work performed and possibly take a general health physical to determine if you are in good health to have this type of surgery, as it is a rather invasive treatment.
During Breast Augmentation Surgery
Most breast augmentation surgeries are similar in nature. You will be placed under general or local anesthesia, and an incision will be made into the breast. The breast implant will then be put into place, and the incision will be closed.
The location of the incision and placement of the implant may vary. Some implants are placed above the breast muscle, while others are placed beneath. There is also a procedure where the implant is placed both under and above the muscle to create a more natural look. Once the surgery is completed, you will be wrapped with bandages to hold the breasts in place. In some situations, a drain may be placed in the skin to remove any excess fluid that builds up.
After Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation does have a rather extensive recovery period, so it is important that when scheduling your surgery, you make sure to allow yourself ample time after to treatment to heal before you return to your regular activities.
Immediately following surgery you will have pain, swelling and bruising. You will be directed to rest for the first few days and avoid any type of activity that involves a great deal of movement. In about a week you will be able to return to light activity, and should be well healed within four to six weeks. It may take several months before your breasts achieve your desired appearance.
