Nobody wants to have a flabby stomach, but for some, no amount of exercise and diet is going to accomplish this. Sometimes the skin on the stomach is damaged, and incapable of returning to its formally flat appearance. In cases such as this an abdominoplasty surgery can help create a flat stomach, and give people the waistline they desire.

The tummy tuck procedure is performed under general anesthesia. After anesthesia is administered the surgeon makes an incision along the pelvis, and sometimes up and around the navel. The incision type depends on how much excess skin needs to be removed. After the skin incision is made the surgeon removes the excess skin, uses sutures to tighten the abdominal muscles, and pulls the skin down to close the incision. In some cases a new belly button will be created.

When the abdominoplasty surgery is over most patients spend one night in the hospital for recovery. Bed rest will also be required for several days following the procedure. The abdomen will be wrapped in gauze and you may be required to wear a compression garment. The stitches from your abdominoplasty procedure will be removed with five to seven days post op. Your activity will be restricted for several weeks following the procedure.

As is with any surgery, there are complications associated with abdominoplasty. The most common abdominoplasty risks would include bleeding, blood clots, improper healing, infection and drug or anesthesia reaction. These abdominoplasty risks can be reduced if you adhere to post surgical instructions.

As is with most cosmetic procedures, the cost of tummy tuck varies greatly. It is an elective procedure, so it is not covered by medical insurance. That said, financing is typically available to patients who want cosmetic surgery.
