Age takes a toll on our appearance, and our face is usually the first place this becomes apparent. The eye area can be particularly affected by the aging process, under eye circles, bags, sagging, crow’s feet, and deep folds can really make a person look old. Eyelid surgery, or Blepharoplasty, is a minor cosmetic procedure that can refresh the appearance of the eyes and refresh the whole face.

During an eyelid surgery, tired and droopy eyes are rejuvenated through several steps. Excess skin is removed, along with pockets of fat from the upper and lower eyelid area. This is done under general anesthesia, so the patient is comfortable during the procedure. Sometime patients combine the eye job with other cosmetic surgery procedures like a brow lift or injectable cosmetics.

After eyelid surgery patients will be bandaged so the surgical area is protected. They will be given ointment to apply, and will be instructed to keep their head elevated to promote optimal healing. Rest is required for about 10 days, at which time patients can return to work in most cases.

In some cases patients experience pain and swelling after blepharoplasty. However, more serious side effects would include infection, bleeding, drooping eyelids, and noticeable scarring. Pain can also be an issue for some patients, but most cosmetic surgeons will prescribe medication to minimize a patient’s discomfort. Ice can also help ease discomfort after an eye job.

Blepharoplasty surgery is not a cheap procedure. The cost is based upon whether you are having both the upper and lower lids done, where you live, what surgeon you are working with, and what technique is being used. Unfortunately an eye job is not considered to be a necessity, so insurance does not typically cover it. That said, financing is available for most cosmetic surgery procedures.
