One of the first places we start to show our age is in the area around our eyes. The skin becomes loose and underlying muscles weaken, resulting in wrinkles and crow's feet. The upper and lower eyelids can start drooping or begin to look puffy. In some instances, this can also obstruct vision. To help patients achieve a youthful and more alert appearance. Our surgeons perform blepharoplasty most often in the Oakland office AAAASF certified operating room. This cosmetic eyelid surgery can tighten loose skin, soften wrinkles, and eliminate puffiness under the eyes. If you would like to learn more about how we can rejuvenate your appearance with blepharoplasty, please contact our office and schedule a consultation.*

Blepharoplasty Candidates

Blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eyelid surgery, is a procedure designed to correct the appearance of drooping, tired-looking, or puffy eyelids. The treatment can be accomplished by removing excess skin and fatty deposits and tightening the remaining tissue. Non-smoking patients who are in good health and want to enhance the appearance of the area immediately surrounding their eyes are usually blepharoplasty candidates.

It is important to understand that cosmetic eyelid surgery is not for everyone. Specific medical and ophthalmic conditions can raise the risks involved with the procedure. Patients who suffer from glaucoma or dry eye may not be candidates because the procedure can aggravate these conditions. Hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure can also preclude patients from blepharoplasty. The best way to determine your candidacy for blepharoplasty is to schedule a consultation. We will review your medical history and take careful note of your goals to make an educated recommendation.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

During upper eyelid surgery, your plastic surgeon will make a small incision in the natural creases of the upper eyelid, and remove excess skin and fatty tissue. If needed, he can also tighten and reposition underlying muscle tissue. The remaining skin of the eyelids will be lifted and sutured into place, which can create a more refreshed and alert appearance.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery primarily involves the removal of fatty deposits and sagging skin from under the eyes. This is accomplished by making a small incision in the lash line. Excess tissue is removed and, if necessary, fatty tissue can be redistributed to minimize puffiness. Once you have healed, dermal fillers may also be used to fill in areas that had previously looked hollowed or sunken. This can leave a smooth, firm, younger-looking area above the cheek, and help you to look rejuvenated and alert.*

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

Patients who have less pronounced bags under the eyes that only require the removal of fatty tissue, but not the removal of skin, may benefit from a transconjunctival blepharoplasty procedure. This less invasive surgery can be performed using several small incisions and typically leaves no visible scarring.
