Achieve a More Muscular Appearance with Calf Implants*

No matter how much they exercise, some individuals have difficulty adding volume and definition to the calf muscles. Men and women who struggle to add muscle mass to their lower legs may be able to modify their appearance with calf implants at our Pittsburgh, PA, plastic surgery practice. This treatment can not only shape and sculpt the lower legs, but also help the entire body look more proportionate. At the Hurwitz Center for Plastic Surgery, Dr. Dennis Hurwitz has over 40 years of experience helping patients improve their appearance.*

Toned, muscular calves can provide a more proportionate appearance.

Should I Consider Calf Implants?

Men and women who desire more developed-looking leg muscles can be considered for calf implants. In addition, calf implants can be used as a reconstructive treatment for individuals who have lost calf tissue due to trauma or medical conditions.*

Candidates should be in excellent general health and in good physical shape. In addition, they should have a clear understanding of the treatment process and realistic expectations for their outcome. Individuals considering calf implants should be psychologically sound and should understand that this procedure is not intended to make the legs look perfect but to offer aesthetic improvement and definition.

What to Expect during the Procedure

Each patient's treatment will be slightly different but you can generally expect several steps:

Consultation & Evaluation

During an initial consultation at our practice, Dr. Hurwitz will speak with you in detail about your cosmetic goals and will design a personalized treatment plan to meet those objectives. During this visit, he will review your medical history in detail to make sure you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure

Placing the Implants

To begin the surgery, Dr. Hurwitz will create an incision in the crease behind the knee. This strategic placement will minimize post-surgical scarring. Next, a pocket will be created either above or below the muscle so that the implant can be placed. Implants can be positioned on the outside of the leg, on the upper inside portion, or both.

Once the healing period is complete, the calves may appear fuller, better defined, and more muscular.*

Once the implants are positioned appropriately, scar tissue will form around them, helping them stay firmly in place. Finally, Dr. Hurwitz will close the incisions with stitches and place a bandage over the site to reduce swelling and inflammation. Receiving calf implants is typically an outpatient procedure and can be completed in about one hour.

Healing and Recovery after Calf Implants

In most cases, patients will be able to return to normal activity in approximately seven to 10 days. As with any surgical procedure, some degree of discomfort, swelling, and bruising is to be expected. However, this can be reduced by taking anti-inflammatory medication and applying cold compresses to the area. Patients should not perform any leg exercises for about one month following the procedure; this will allow the calves to heal properly.

Once the healing period is complete, the calves may appear fuller, better defined, and more muscular. In addition, the legs will appear balanced and in proportion with the rest of the body. Many of our patients have reported increased confidence and self-esteem following their calf implant procedure and are often more comfortable wearing certain types of clothing, such as shorts or swimwear.*
