Rejuvenate Your Skin*

If you are dissatisfied with a dull, uneven complexion, you may benefit from microdermabrasion at the Hurwitz Center for Plastic Surgery in Pittsburgh, PA. This noninvasive treatment can improve your complexion by removing dead cells from the top layer of your skin through the use of tiny aluminum oxide crystals. While some patients may see exceptional results from just one treatment, those with more extensive skin damage may benefit more from a series of procedures. All of our microdermabrasion treatments are provided by our skilled aesthetician Molly O'Tell and are overseen by Dr. Dennis Hurwitz.*

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatment that removes damaged outer layers of skin to reveal the healthier skin below the surface. Ideally, patients are left with skin that is improved in tone, color, and texture. As a bonus, the exfoliation process also stimulates collagen production, which is an integral part of a firm, rejuvenated appearance. We typically target this treatment to skin on the face and neck, but in certain cases we may recommend it for the hand and chest, as well.*

Are You a Candidate?

We typically suggest microdermabrasion to patients who hope to address:

  • Sun damage
  • Acne
  • Minor acne scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Clogged or enlarged pores
  • Rosacea
  • Stretch marks

However, patients should be aware that microdermabrasion is on the more conservative end of the skin rejuvenation spectrum and cannot treat more severe skin damage. During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss your specific treatment goals with the doctor and have him evaluate your skin to determine which procedure will most benefit you.*

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Patients typically need anywhere between five to 12 sessions to achieve their desired results. Each appointment is spaced apart every one to two weeks so that your skin has a chance to heal. While Dr. Hurwitz personally oversees every med-spa treatment, our highly trained aesthetician Molly O'Tell will perform the procedure.

Many of our patients enjoy significant rejuvenation from their microdermabrasion sessions, taking advantage of healthier skin and increased self-confidence.

An individual session usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour. To begin, your aesthetician will first clean the skin to remove any oil or debris. She can then apply the microdermabrasion device to exfoliate the top layer of skin and clear out the pores. Patients typically describe the exfoliation process as a warm sensation with little to no discomfort.*

After Your Treatment

You should be able to see a noticeable change in your skin almost immediately after treatment. Because microdermabrasion is a noninvasive procedure, patients typically require no downtime. In fact, many patients return to work immediately after their treatment session. While your skin may feel slightly wind-burned and appear slightly pink or reddened, it should fade within a few hours or by the next day.*

However, it is important to protect your skin from sun exposure immediately after your appointment to ensure the best results. Patients should also keep their recently treated skin as clean and moisturized as possible.
