Age and Plastic Surgery: Which Facial Procedure Is Best Suited to You?

By Dennis Hurwitz on September 23, 2017

While most adults can undergo plastic surgery at any point in their life, your age and the type of plastic surgery do matter. At The Pittsburgh Center for Plastic Surgery, we provide a wide range of facial plastic surgeries, including facelift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and brow lift.

Dr. Dennis Hurwitz discusses the facial plastic surgery procedures we provide at our Pittsburg, PA practice and the age at which he most commonly performs these plastic surgery procedures. Before any procedure is performed, he will complete a full physical examination to make sure you are in good health and have realistic expectations.

What Facial Plastic Surgery Can Address

Facial plastic surgery can help reverse the signs of aging and even create more balanced features, giving you a more attractive appearance and more confident outlook. While many men and women begin noticing fine lines and wrinkles in their 30s and 40s, genetics, stress, and sun damage can make them develop even sooner. In such cases, patients in their 20s may benefit from cosmetic surgery. Facial cosmetic surgery can help address:

  • Droopy eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Disproportionate facial features
  • Crooked or large nose
  • Fine lines and wrinkles throughout the face
  • Hollow cheeks and lost volume
  • Undefined jawline
  • Small lips

Facial Plastic Surgeries and the Age We Perform Them

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), patients between the ages of 35 to 50 are the most common age group to seek plastic surgery. However, we do treat patients well under and above this age range. Although teenagers may be dissatisfied with certain facial features, we do encourage them to wait until they are 18 to undergo surgery to make sure development is complete. Any procedures performed under the age of 18 will require parental consent.

Dr. Hurwitz does, however, perform cleft lip and palate repair on newborns and toddlers. When performed early, it will improve the functionality of the mouth, as well as assist in the overall development of their facial features.

20s and 30s

Patients at this age generally struggle with unbalanced facial features, such as a large or crooked nose, undefined chin, and the beginning signs of aging. The most frequently requested facial procedures in this age range include:

  • Nose job (rhinoplasty)
  • Chin implant
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers to smooth fine lines and wrinkles

40s and 50s

By this age range, collagen production has decreased and the appearance of wrinkles is inevitable. The loss of volume in the face can also make cheeks appear hollow, lips small, and jaw lines to sag. Beneficial facial procedures include:

  • Brow lift
  • Lipoaugmentation (fat injections) to improve facial contours and reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Eyelid surgery

60s and Above

Patients at this age are continuing to struggle with the negative effects of decreased collagen production. Side effects can include saggy cheeks and jowls, undefined facial contours, and deeper lines and wrinkles. At this stage, you may benefit from combining a number of procedures into one, including:

  • Facelift
  • Browlift
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Lipoaugmentation
